Ted Talks Assignment:

Remember, you are coming up with an independent thought/thesis/idea and are expressing it in the form of a TED talk (anecdotal hook, transition, exposition, take-away point).  It should be related to either narrative structure or author’s style.

The students become the teachers!

Here’s a list of the short stories I made available in class:

The Lottery by Shirley Jackson

The Enormous Radio by John Cheever

The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin

The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant

Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway

Brilliant Silence by Spencer Holst

A & P by John Updike

Guests of the Nation by Frank O’Connor

Bigfoot Stole my Wife and I am Bigfoot by Ron Carlson

The Handsomest Drowned Man in the World by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber

The Second Bakery Attack by Haruki Murakami

Sleep by Haruki Murakami

The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe

The Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen Poe

The Kid Nobody Could Handle by Kurt Vonnegut

All the King’s Horses by Kurt Vonnegut

Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut

Unready to Wear by Kurt Vonnegut

Missing 1984 Research Papers

So, we are past the deadline for this assignment and there are still some of you who have not turned in your papers.

I would be shocked if any of you aren’t aware of your status with regard to this major paper, but just in case, I created a ghost assignment (2 pts completion credit) on edline so that you can determine if you are missing one of the two required components (hard copy and electronic turnitin.com submission).

2= I have both; you are all set.

1= I’m missing either your electronic submission, or I don’t have your hard copy.

0= I’m missing both.

Check yourself before you wreck yourself.

Homework Assignment

I’ve had a few requests for an additional homework assignment, to mitigate the destructive force of the Grapes of Wrath Journal Entries.  So, here goes.  Read the following excerpt from a book entitled, Top Secret America and respond to the following questions: (your response should be no more than 1 page typed)

“Is the information presented in this excerpt troubling or comforting?”

“What are the implications for everyday U.S. citizens?”
